The FortiGate 5000 series ATCA-based platforms are carrier-grade network security solutions that are enabled by the modular FortiGate OS™ IMS distributed software system. This FortiIMS software extends the capabilities of Fortinet's ATCA platform to include Multi Media malware scanning, per-user content filtering and GTP Firewalling.

Antivirus scanning The growing threat of Multimedia Message Service (MMS) fraud can be countered with a network-based, operating system independent scanning solution. Fortinet's solution is able to scan multiple MMS interfaces types, (MM1/3/4/7) on a single ATCA blade with transaction rates in excess of 300 MMS messages per second. Additional protocols, including HTTP, IM, and FTP can also be scanned. Detailed analysis reports can then be generated to determine not only the virus name but the sender, recipient and handset device used to generate this malware messages. In addition to detecting, blocking and reporting on this activity the solution is also able to notify the sender of the virus that they have been infected and what counter measures they should be taking.

Adult content filtering The web browsers that are built into most cellular phones pose a different type of security vulnerability. Rather than external virus threats, the security issue with web content has to do with access to adult content. Access to this material can pose a legal, moral, or publicity-related threat to the wireless carrier.
Fortinet's solution is able to identify users by their MSISDN and then apply appropriate category based web access protection using the FortiGuard URL Filtering service. Users are mapped to specific access profiles (e.g. ADULT, CHILD) by querying the operators customer database.

Acceptable use enforcement Users who have been infected by malware can find themselves generating virus infected, or SPAM messages without their knowledge. The threat to the mobile operator is that their IP address space can become blacklisted by DNSRBL services which will in turn comprise the ability of the operator to provide email access to users home mailboxes. The FortiMail solution can be introduced transparently in to the network infrastructure of the operator to provide a comprehensive scanning and MSISDN reporting service preventing the blacklisting of the IP space and reporting on the SPAM senders within their network.
