Ulsan Cable TV protects broadband Internet subscribers with Fortinet UTM platforms

UCTV realizes enhanced network performance after deployment of FortiGate-5000 for complete content protection

SEOUL, Korea; December 20, 2005 - Fortinet - the pioneer and market leader of Unified Threat Management and only provider of ASIC-accelerated, network-based multi-threat security systems for real-time network protection - today announced that Ulsan Cable TV has successfully deployed Fortinet's FortiGate-5000 UTM platform and FortiLog-400 through Nanopol, a Fortinet partner in Korea.

Ulsan Cable TV is a TV broadcaster which also provides high-speed Internet service to over 50,000 subscribers Ulsan, Korea. UCTV recognized the need to upgrade its security infrastructure to address the proliferation of viruses, worms and other computer threats on the Internet, which could infect the computer systems of subscribers and negatively affect network quality.

UCTV began evaluations for security solutions. High on their list of criteria was comprehensive protection against a wide range of computer and network threats, from viruses, worms and Trojans, to "blended threats" that combined attack vectors from different threat categories. Another important consideration was Quality of Service (QoS) for the network: the solution that UCTV would eventually deploy needed to provide the requisite protection without slowing down network performance itself.

UCTV's evaluation of Fortinet's FortiGate systems went very well. Mr. Yong-Geun Yim, Assistant Manager for the Technical Support Team for UCTV explains: "In our evaluations, Fortinet's FortiGate system filtered about 1.2 million network sessions. After blocking sessions that contained malicious content, we had between 200,000 and 300,000 sessions. This enhanced the quality of the network greatly."

Mr. Yim also liked the ASIC-based design of Fortinet's FortiGate platforms, which enabled near real-time detection and response to security threats. This hardware-based acceleration meant that network throughput would not be compromised.

UCTV decided to purchase and deploy Fortinet's FortiGate-5000 for complete content protection for web and mail traffic, and VPN functions, and FortiLog for generating security reports and monitoring the status of the network. Nanopol, a Fortinet distributor and partner in Korea provided the professional services for the deployment.

Since the successful deployment, UCTV has decided to expand its services to broadband subscribers by offering additional services, such as spam and grayware filtering through FortiClient.

Fortinet's FortiGate-5000 series Unified Threat Management(UTM) platforms, poweredby the revolutionary FortiASIC™ Content Processor chip, detect and eliminate viruses, worms, and other content-based threats without reducing network performance. The FortiGate-5000 units feature AdvancedTCA (ATCA) specifications-compliant chassis for next generation carrier-class equipment, hot-swappable power and fan modules for high availability power and cooling, and blade modules with Gigabit-speed Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) ports and gigabit ethernet ports. The backplane interconnect provides a hardwired high availability connectivity for active-active and active-passive failover configurations. All FortiGate-5000 units are kept up to date automatically by Fortinet's FortiProtect™ Network, which provides continuous updates that ensure protection against the latest viruses, worms, Trojans, and other threats - around the clock, and around the world.

"The FortiGate-5000 series UTM platforms have earned rave reviews in the Korean press for its IPS, firewall and antivirus features. It is especially favored by larger enterprises and service providers because of its ability to sustain high network throughput. We are pleased at the success that Ulsan Cable TV has enjoyed with their deployment, and the professionalism and competence of Nanopol." said Mr. Jong Duk Kim, Country Manger of Fortinet Korea.
