FortiGate-3600 Enterprise Security Appliances and FortiAnalyzer™ Logging & Reporting Systems Provide Comprehensive Campus-Wide Security Solution
SINGAPORE., November 21, 2005
- Fortinet - the pioneer and market leader of Unified Threat Management and only provider of ASIC-accelerated, network-based multi-threat security systems for real-time network protection
- today announced that the Centre for Educational Development (CED) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore has purchased and deployed two FortiGate-3600 systems to provide reliable, comprehensive security for its user-base of 25,000 students, faculty and staff. The CED evaluated solutions from a number of vendors, including Network Associates and Symantec, before deciding on Fortinet because of superior ease of use and deployment, a unified management interface to a wide and comprehensive range of security functions and features, and superior performance through its ASIC-based design.
The CED provides convenient, "one-stop" access for staff and students, to a range of services and resources, such as eLearning, distance education, video production, multimedia design, graphics, photography, faculty development and audio-visual technical support. The CED needed a security solution that would protect its network applications, and its users - 23,000 students, 1,300 professors and 3,000 staff accessing the edveNTUre eLearning services (https://edventure.ntu.edu.sg) - from unauthorized access and malicious attacks. The CED determined that they needed a security solution that would provide protection against viruses, intrusion detection, as well as provide logging and auditing facilities, so that tracking and forensics could be done. The solution also had to be easy to manage, because of the limited support staff available to the CED.
The CED purchased and deployed a pair of FortiGate-3600 enterprise security appliances in a high availability (HA) configuration, as well as one FortiAnalyzer-800 logging and reporting system for capturing, analyzing and storing security information. The FortiGate-3600 systems protect the eLearning Operations Center at the CED, a heterogeneous network of 90 servers running a variety of operating systems, such as Solaris, Linux, Microsoft Windows and SGI. Since implementing the Fortinet solutions, the CED has seen a significant drop in hacking incidents and the new security infrastructure has protected the department from some of the most powerful worm and virus attacks.
"We are impressed with the FortiGate-3600's ability to identify anomalies related to potential hacking attempts," said Associate Professor Daniel Tan , Director of CED at NTU. "The systems have helped block and neutralize a number of virus outbreaks before they hit our eLearning network. When [the] Zotob [worm] hit, my servers remained unscathed - that was pretty impressive. We were also pleasantly surprised with the ease of deployment of firmware upgrades, even with the systems in HA configuration. We are delighted with Fortinet's platform and continue to reap significant security, cost and performance benefits from this implementation."
"Our customers face many competing demands: budgets are still low, but the rise in virus attacks, phishing scams and hacking incidents still need to be effectively dealt with, " said Hansen Chang, vice president of Asia-Pacific for Fortinet, Inc. "Fortinet's solutions are helping organizations like NTU address these challenges with affordable, reliable and flexible solutions that simplify traffic management, improve content delivery and lower total cost of ownership."
Fortinet's FortiGate-3600 antivirus firewalls are enterprise class systems that provide a complete content security solution to protect against the growing virulence of content-based threats at the network's edge, while delivering the highest possible performance. With six gigabit-capacity interfaces and up to 4 Gbps throughput, the FortiGate-3600 enables a new level of protection against today's increasingly content-based attacks. It is an optimal solution for large enterprises like NTU since it provides 4 gigabit fiber (SX or LX) ports and 2 gigabit copper ports for the most demanding networks
The FortiAnalyzer-800 is a dedicated logging and reporting appliance that securely aggregates and analyzes log data. The system provides network administrators with a comprehensive view of network usage and security information, supporting the needs of enterprises and service providers responsible for discovering and addressing vulnerabilities across dispersed FortiGate installations. They minimize the effort required to monitor and maintain acceptable use policies, to identify attack patterns and prosecute attackers, and to comply with governmental regulations regarding privacy and disclosure of security breaches. They accept and process a full range of log records provided by FortiGate devices, including traffic, event, virus, attack, content filtering, and email filtering data.
