Korean organization that promotes technology literacy deploys Fortinet's unified threat management platforms to provide security for its study rooms.
SEOUL, South Korea, July 31, 2006
-- Fortinet - the pioneer and leading provider of multi-threat security solutions
- today announced that about 170 FortiGate™-60 systems have been chosen and deployed by DACOM, Korea's second largest communications service provider, in the Munhae Education Institute's study rooms throughout South Korea, to provide comprehensive security for rural communities.
The Munhae Education Institute is part of a government initiative to provide technology education to citizens in rural communities, as well as segments of the population, such as the disabled and senior citizens, who may not have ready access to technology. The institute is supported by the Korea Agency for Digital Opportunity and Promotion (KADO), an agency that was established in 1984 to implement the Ministry of Information and Communication's plans to bridge the digital divide.
The Munhae Education Institute runs 170 study rooms with typically 50 to 60 nodes each room, throughout South Korea. The project to deploy security for the study rooms was undertaken by DACOM's Internet Business unit.
DACOM's Internet Business unit provides broadband services, such as Korea's Boranet (Broad Open Rapid Access Network), digital leased-line services, satellite broadcasting relay services, and managed security services to businesses and the general public.
The deployment of networks in rural parts of the country posed unique challenges for DACOM, such as limited on-site skills, accessibility to the communities, and the difficulties of providing support. DACOM determined that unified threat management platforms would be most suited to the Munhae Education Institute's study rooms because of the aggregated security capabilities, and considered only Fortinet's FortiGate-60 because of its ease of use and administration. DACOM purchased Fortinet's FortiGate-60 systems from SysOne, a Fortinet reseller in Korea. The project was started at the end of 2004, and is still on-going.
"Providing security to rural study rooms is important to keep the networks stable, but it can be difficult," said Mr. Kim Eu-dong, director at DACOM's Internet business unit. "We address this challenge by providing centralized monitoring, operation, maintenance and reporting for all the FortiGate systems in the Munhae Education Institute's study rooms through DACOM's own ESM (Enterprise Security Management) system and the DACOM managed security center."
Fortinet's FortiGate-60 series family delivers critical security functions in a hardened security platform tuned for reliability, usability, rapid deployment, low operational costs and - most importantly - a superior detection rate against known and unknown anomalous threats. FortiGate-60 systems can be managed remotely by FortiManager™ for configuration and policy changes. All FortiGate-60 series units are kept up to date automatically by Fortinet's FortiGuard™ Subscription Services, which provide continuous updates that ensure protection against the latest viruses, worms, Trojans, and other threats - around the clock, and around the world.
"We are proud to be associated with the noble and very important work of the Munhae Education Institute and KADO in reducing the gap in technology literacy," said Mr. Kim Jong Duk, Country Manger for Fortinet in Korea. "We recognize the difficult challenges that DACOM faces, and we will continue to support them in their efforts, with every resource at our disposal."

The mission of the Munhae Education Institute is to develop and implement ways to reduce the "digital divide" in Korea. It aims to bring technology literacy to rural communities, senior citizens and the disabled, and give them ready access to information and communications resources, thereby improving their quality of life. Another goal of the agency is to bridge the technology gap between North and South Korea. The agency develops learning content, and provides its own instructors for its courses.
