Fortinet Provides Firewall to Core Data Centers at Vopak

FortiGate Appliances Bring High Performance Security, Flexibility and Reliability to Global Market Leader's Network

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - Apr. 14, 2008 - Fortinet® - the pioneer and leading provider of unified threat management (UTM) solutions - today announced that Royal Vopak (Vopak), the world's largest independent tank terminal operator specializing in the storage and handling of liquid and gaseous chemical and oil products, has implemented Fortinet's FortiGate™ security appliances to help protect its two core data centers in the Netherlands. Fortinet's systems are used for high-performance firewalling to segment Vopak's network for application hosting and to clean those applications from viruses and other malware attacks.

Initially looking at changing the network set-up in its main data centers, Vopak quickly realized there was a need to implement a security solution that would allow the IT staff to have better control over the network traffic, improve its network infrastructure and create a flexible security environment that could accommodate increasing performance needs. Based on those requirements, Vopak evaluated a number of firewall solutions from different vendors and found that Fortinet's FortiGate security appliances were the best fit in terms of performance, reliability and flexibility.

"FortiGate appliances allowed us to have our security grow with the needs of our network infrastructure, evolving from 200 Mbps to 1 Gbps performance over time," said Frank Santana, IT architect at Vopak. "With Fortinet's firewall solution, we control what comes in and out of our data centers, and we have been able to include new applications in our service catalogue without jeopardizing the availability and security of our core systems."

Vopak has deployed a cluster of FortiGate-800 security appliances at its primary data center for high availability and another FortiGate-800 at its disaster recovery center. Thanks to Fortinet's ASIC-accelerated hardware and purpose-built FortiOS™ operating system, FortiGate security devices provide high-speed firewall protection for all the centralized applications, including ERP systems and Web applications, used by 3,000 Vopak employees around the world. The IT team also leverages the security zone feature of FortiGate security appliances to segment the network for application hosting optimization.

"The fact that Vopak relies on our FortiGate appliances for firewall in the core data center is another great proof point of the robustness, performance and reliability of our FortiGate security appliances," said Andre Stewart, EMEA vice president at Fortinet. "With our latest hardware technologies, we measure up against any point solution firewall vendors while providing our customers with greater flexibility in their security deployments."
