Altium Boosts Security with Global Deployment of Fortinet Technology

FortiGate™ Enterprise Security Appliances Help Leading IT Electronic Design Software Developer to Secure its Distributed Network Reaching Across Four Continents

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Feb. 28, 2006 - Fortinet - the pioneer and market leader of Unified Threat Management and only provider of ASIC-accelerated, network-based multi-threat security systems for real-time network protection - today announced that Altium Limited, a leading global developer and supplier of electronics design software for the Microsoft Windows platform, has deployed an enterprise network security platform from Fortinet to protect and manage its headquarters offices in Australia and the United States, and regional branch offices in Asia and Europe.

Coincident with growth, Altium expanded its network to accommodate new offices and users, and as a result, found substantial performance and reliability limitations in its previous software-based firewall solution, which would lock-up under pressure. Concurrently, Altium's management was increasingly emphasizing the need to keep costs in line. This made an evaluation of alternative, more cost-effective and better performing security solutions imperative.

With this in mind, Altium's Sydney, Australia-based IT staff replaced its previous software security solution with an end-to-end multi-layered enterprise security platform from Fortinet to provide the highest levels of protection for sensitive data, maximized performance and reliability, and the greatest total cost of ownership. The Fortinet solution was purchased from Australian distributor WhiteGold, and deployed with help from Dimension Data, a system integration company also in Australia. Altium's network security platform from Fortinet includes:

  • Two FortiGate-300A systems to protect its Sydney, Australia headquarters
  • Two FortiGate-300A systems for its US headquarters in San Diego, Calif.
  • Two FortiGate-300A systems for its offices in the Netherlands
  • Two FortiGate-300A systems for its offices in Germany
  • Two FortiGate-200A systems to protect its office in Tasmania
  • Six FortiGate-200A systems - two deployed in each of its offices in Tokyo, Japan; Shanghai, China and Switzerland
  • One FortiAnalyzer security logging, reporting and analysis appliance at its Australia headquarters

Since deploying Fortinet's FortiGate enterprise security appliances and FortiAnalyzer system, Altium has seen a substantial reduction in malware, cut spam by approximately 80 per cent, and kept its network secure and performing at optimal levels.

Altium's IT Manager Nathan Stanfield said: "We are delighted with our Fortinet solutions. Deploying them has made our network security platform more effective and more manageable. Fortinet's ability to push the latest virus signatures into our FortiGate systems automatically, which eliminates the need to check and maintain updates, has improved our security and provided our network administrator more bandwidth for ongoing maintenance of our systems around the globe."

Distributed Networks Require Complete Protection
Fortinet's FortiGate-200A and 300A systems are ASIC-accelerated enterprise security appliances that integrate essential security applications such as firewall, antivirus, VPN, intrusion prevention, Web filtering, antispam, antispyware and traffic shaping. The FortiGate systems are able to scan Internet traffic in real time, which includes Web browsing in addition to email and file transfers, providing customers like Altium with complete protection against rapidly evolving content-based blended threats and other forms of unwanted network traffic. All FortiGate systems are kept up-to-date automatically through Fortinet's FortiGuard™ Network, which delivers continuous and automatic "push" updates that ensure protection against the latest viruses, worms, Trojans, and other threats - around the clock, and around the world.

"The challenges facing Altium are representative of those facing millions of organizations around the world," said Hansen Chang, Fortinet's vice president for Asia-Pacific. "Intrusions and content-based threats can have a crippling impact on businesses, and conventional solutions are simply not able to deal with them. We are proud to provide Altium with a complete multi-threat security platform to cost-effectively secure its globally-distributed network without compromising performance."
